Go for it.

  1. Aren’t tax returns *Fun*? – Starting 2012 off not with a retrospective post but with a crash course on nonprofit organizations’ tax returns. Looked at some feminist & health nonprofit returns, not necessarily due to any irregularities but just to show some highlights and how hard it can be to get the info you want.

  2. I don’t usually do end-of-year lists, but somehow was prompted to do a ‘best of 2011’ at re:Cycling, the blog of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research:

What to tell the girl in my life about menstruation?, by Alexandra Jacoby

Boxing and Bleeding, guest post by Robin Percyz

Menopause isn’t for Dummies, by Elizabeth Kissling

Curb Your (Menstrual) Enthusiasm, by David Linton

Feeling Uncertainty, Confusion, and Frustration about Menopause, by Heather Dillaway

(A completely subjective ‘best of’ selection, of course!)

  3. I post this every year around now, and it usually goes over well 🙂 :

“The way it works is often this: it’s your scheduled time to work on your project. Suddenly, however, you feel an irresistible need to do the laundry, mop the floor, shop for groceries, mow the lawn, or clean out the garage. Probably, the need isn’t truly urgent — or, at least, no more urgent than it was a few hours ago, or will be a few hours from now, after you’ve finished your work. The sudden, irresistible urgency is the clue that it’s not really the laundry itself that’s important, but your need to procrastinate and avoid making progress.”

  4. I write a pagan-flavored blog that often discusses depression/mental health from a spiritual point of view. Last month I wrote about how I find my zen by cross-stitching .

My most recent post wasn’t quite as serious- it’s well wishes for the new year with an embedded video of Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt singing “What are you Doing for New Year’s Eve?”

  5. A post inspired by a couple of threads here, namely airplane porn and christmas hugs.. not sure if I’ve linked this one last week:
On the subject of boundaries and courtesy.

Some love for my favorite band of the moment, the Mountain Goats (p.s. if you follow them on twitter, they have been very vocal about their pro-choice leanings, which is another reason I lurves them)
Friday Music Lurve: The Mountain Goats

And the obligatory personal retrospective, the end of year post:
Well, I guess it’s that time again, isn’t it?

  6. I don’t have any links to post. I just wanted to mention that I’m pretty awesome. Just sayin’.

  7. I posted “6 steps towards gender balance in 2012!” at http://curt-rice.com. It starts like this:

It’s easy to become a more diverse organization. And it’s smart, too.

I’ve seen one example of dramatic change right here at the University of Tromsø: In 2007, only 18% of our full professors were women. Four years later, as a result of deliberate and explicit programs, we’ve increased that number by 50%! We now find over 27% of our professorial positions filled by women, well ahead of the 18% percent in Europe but lagging slightly behind the 30% documented in the United States.

Maybe the next example of dramatic change will be in your organization. Could 2012 be the year in which you and your colleagues take a big step forward in diversifying your workforce? Is this the year you will see more women at the top?

If you’re ready to act, the following six steps will move you in the right direction.

  8. I wrote about my experiences with BDSM, and how I think it’s more than possible to be submissive during sex and still be a feminist who believes women shouldn’t have to submit to anyone. (Not exactly radical stuff on the blogosphere, I know, but something I’ve been challenged on in real life more than enough times.)

Trigger warning for discussion of violent (but fully consensual) sex.

  9. So a week or two ago this post about insensitivity to assault of prisoners (Still Not a Joke — Good Awareness Campaign From Just Detention International) wound up spread far and wide via Tumblr blogs.

This week I got a very nice note from Just Detention International saying thanks to everyone who sent notes of support to prisoners who’ve been dealing with assault. I’m relaying their thank-you on to everyone who passed the information along.

  10. I wrote a piece on the gendered expectations in Christmas adverts for a great new student blog, Shrillblog.co.uk.

I wrote a parody of an advice article at my student newspaper, about 5 Things All Girls Appreciate. *cringe*

Also, our uni voted on whether to replace our Women’s Officers with Gender Equality Officers. Check out my summary of why that would be a bad idea…(the student body voted to keep the Women’s Officers woooo)

    Finally, recognising my own privilege.

  11. I wrote a response to Chally’s excellent piece on loving yourself and the social value of putting yourself down: here.

And I wrote about why the Doctor Who Christmas special pissed me off in terms of its portrayal of motherhood and womanhood. I got some really great comments on this as well! Here.

  12. Happy New Year to all!

I made a flow chart showing how an ordinary conversation about a woman’s experience with sexism can veer off into mansplaining, and wrote a short blog post as an introduction. I’m linking to the post and you can link to the full-size version from there.
