  1. I didn’t realize she quits her job in the end. That is really annoying! I have worked full time or gone to school full time and worked part-time since my daughter was born 7 years ago. It’s totally possible to do it.

  2. I fucking hated that book. Fucking hated it. Hated it as much as I hated Twilight.

I hated that “the answer” that the protagonist (who should have never married or had children in the first place) found to “make herself happy” was to quit her job and suborn herself to her husband and kids. Blech.

I made myself read it all of the way through to the end, and then went out and bought a copy just so that I could burn it.

  3. Unlike most places, that post has some great comments.

Gimlet: It’s like the book poses the question: “How does The Modern Lady find balance between work and family?”
And then the answer is “It’s impossible! K BYE.”

Nicole Cliffe: I would totally support a parody version in which SJP’s character discovers that the secret is washing in the blood of young virgins, a la Elizabeth Bathory…

Gimlet: “Well, you know, I keep my priorities in order, and try not to get too stressed out. And every day I set aside a little bit of time to reconnect with my dear Lord Satan. He really keeps me grounded.”

As Nicole says, that’s just as sensible as the book itself.

  4. Haven’t read the book and have no desire to, nor do I wish to see the movie, so I loved the article in general and for confirming my suspicions. But I just had to share that after reading I sighed jokingly to my husband, “I don’t know how YOU do it,” and he responded with, “left handed.” LOL

  5. Yeah, I took one look at the movie trailer and was all, “Obviously honey, your husband does jack shit. That’s what.”

Good to know that’s what basically goes on in the book!
