I don’t want to change my body (talk of fat shaming) — I am tired of having my body associated with negative stereotypes about fat people, yes. But it’s not my body I want to change. No Blame (talk of body shaming, disordered eating) — Examining how my genetics and my mother influenced my body, my body image, and my relationship with food. In asana goodness, an analysis of chaturanga with an emphasis on safe alignment, along with some modifications to make the pose accessible to more people.
This week I took a look at the vintage glory of the old Modess ads, and the sanitary world of ballgowns: http://millicentandcarlafran.wordpress.com/2011/08/19/modess-because-the-blood-and-ballgowns-edition/

Was Susan Sontag right about the decline of cinema in 1996? http://bit.ly/o27MAs Secular conservatives and Rick Perry- a frightening marriage. http://bit.ly/ojGN4Y
A few weeks ago I discussed geek culture and its basis on the humanities. I’ve also recently written about the problem of self-objectification in geek culture (and all those slave Leias). I argue that we are approaching this problem from the wrong angle, and mostly blaming women instead of our culture(s). And I also have a rant about policing dialects and the language of students, and discuss how this policing is always political, and disprivileges minorities and poor people.
Support the 45,000 Verizon strikers! (strike officially over on the 23rd, negotiations still underway) Governor Perry visits my town! Yeah, campaigning already. I expect him to take SC and ride the wave to Super Tuesday… unless anything unforeseen comes up (and one of my Texan commenters implies there might be!), I predict Perry vs Obama as the 2012 ticket.
Will marriage equality really make our society a welcoming and equal one for LGBT people? Marriage equality and the trickle-down effect. And quickly noting that, in the couple of hundred KM of the Camino de Santiago I walked alone, not one person <a commented on my being a woman walking alone. And the immense and unexpected freedom in taking ownership of the outdoors. Questions.

http://hypervision.blogspot.com/2011/08/two-jessicas-and-do-i-write-about.html The new modeling company in London called Viva Model Management celebrated its opening by releasing pictures of their talent without makeup, hair styling, or any kind of retouching or “PhotoChopping”. Apparently this is Jessica Clarke from New Zealand and not…..
Doctors debate dyspareunia part 2: Is pain the only valid FSD? – Part 2 in a now-continuing series in which I examine how doctors decide which one of them is best equipped to handle sexual pain. This week (and next) I’m looking at contradictory statements made by one of the most famous anti-FSD activists. Part 1 is over in this direction. I also made a quick link pointing to a dating site for people who cannot or otherwise choose not to engage in sexual intercourse.
I’m going to medical school in the autumn—if I can make it there. Funding and equal access are feminist issues, so come take a look round my website to find out more. Thanks for clicking through. This week, I had a slew of awesome guest posts on my blog. On growing your own food and how that relates to feminism: Food, Farming, & Feminism On negotiating the perfect job with the perfect place and the perfect partner: Not Just About Me On not changing your name after marriage, and how sometimes it’s about honoring the women in your life: Honoring My Foremothers On fighting with your partner and honoring your own wishes: Nothing’s Perfect
It’s World O’ Crap’s 8th Blogiversary, and we look back to the early, formative days when we interviewed God, and sent Christian Fundamentalists on playdates with pagans: This is YOUR LIFE!
This week I talked about the new Gloria Steinem documentary on HBO, and the lack of female artists in Pitchfork’s 15 Writers/15 Songs feature.
I compiled all of the homophobia I could recall from pop culture and threw it into one post entitled Ways to Hate the Gays: http://transplantportation.com/2011/08/15/ways-to-hate-the-gays/ USA’s show Necessary Roughness has been doing some interesting stuff, IMO, with unpacking masculinity and machismo: http://transplantportation.com/2011/08/18/why-i-love-necessary-roughness/

I wrote posts! SPOILER ALERT: The black guy dies., about the ironic issues in Rise of the Planet of the Apes “Luv U, Baby Girl”, about the latest chapter in my second novel. Enjoy!
I wrote a post on Chakaia Booker, a contemporary artist addressing topics such as black identity, sexuality and femininity, and environmental issues through her wearable art and rubber tire sculptures.
I wrote a bit about Lil Wayne’s latest song: http://www.nerdyfeminist.com/2011/08/oh-lil-wayneyou-still-suck.html And the horrifying story of the parents who “spanked” their child to death. http://www.nerdyfeminist.com/2011/08/what-is-happening.html
Like all good feminists, I always heard that “the personal is political.” Until I saw the lame bio-documentary on Gloria Steinem that seems to occlude a lot of the political, and which I write about here: http://feminema.wordpress.com/2011/08/20/gloria-in-her-own-words-2011-the-personal-is-maybe-just-personal/
You may have heard about Catherine Hakim’s new book on “erotic capital” – which, among other things, exhorts women to act sexy to get in on life, assumes all women are white and able-bodied, and claims that gay dudes “aren’t interested in getting to know” anyone. Amazingly enough, I disagreed!
I put my out of print novel, Place Last Seen (Picador 2000) on Kindle. It can be yours for the low low price of 2.99. http://goo.gl/rPXnK
http://adamantevecjsr.wordpress.com/2011/08/19/sex-vs-gender-sex-as-socially-constructed-too/ Often feminists divide sex and gender up into biological/factual bodies vs. the socially contructed identities attached to those bodies. In this post, I talk about the ways I see sex, not just gender, as socially constructed too.
The kinds of history that go into building identity: How do culture and family history function differently for white people and non-white people? Feminist wordplay: your turn: I typed “vulvarity” instead of “vulgarity” by mistake, and now we’re having a fun time in comments changing words slightly for feminist purposes. Lastly, Come share what you’ve been reading lately – I’ve got some great recs!
This week I interviewed Natasia of Hot Femme in NYC. We spoke about whatever the hell it means to be a femme, the Kinsey scale, and those irritating generalisations about queer women. I also hopped on the Beyonce bandwagon. Giddy up! And here’s my usual Sunday Hustle, featuring fashion and feminism, the gender wage scale and beauty privilege. Enjoy!
I wrote about the Buffalo study that found increasingly sexualized images of women in media (unsurprisingly) and its cultural relevance: http://larkincallaghan.wordpress.com/2011/08/19/we-still-arent-imagining-sexist-advertising-after-all/
Hello everyone! At the Czech, recently: …I digest the existence of a self-declared “Modern Harriet Tubman”. …show some solidarity for workers protesting Hershey’s Chocolate and Verizon. …and comment a bit an Lewis R. Gordon’s amazing article, The Problem With Affirmative Action.
I wrote something a bit silly, imagining if Mary Wollstonecraft showed up on my doorstep. I think she might be a little miffed that so much of Vindication is still relevant http://stavvers.wordpress.com/2011/08/19/a-daydream-with-a-point/
Two posts this week 🙂 First off, a major trigger warning for sexual assault with this one: All I Can Take And one about coming to terms with liking traditionally girly activities: Girl Things
This week, I wrote about how I feel the “scare them celibate” approach in sex education lets young people down when it comes to sexual health. It’s a trend that I notice not in abistinence-only sex-ed (although I am sure it exists there too) but in forms that emphasise the use of barrier contraception. Possible “bad taste” warning for TMI! Adventures With Imaginary STIs In the wake of a Guardian article about the Bradford wrongful dismissal “slave collar” case, I also had some thoughts on the issue, Is BDSM a belief? Finally, I again discussed the difference between being afraid of talking to people, and just not having anything to say to them, particularly with reference to PUA advice and my ongoing mission to see if there’s anything usable for a pro-feminist introverted dude in it.
Here’s what’s been going on at Gender Across Borders this past week: Quick Hit: Women Find Jobs in Guide and Trekking Industries During Nepal’s Tourism Year Pro-natalism in Crisis-ridden Eastern Europe Entraps Young Women Talking about Women in the Middle East Oh, and we’re calling for writers for a new series on Stigma, Shame & Sexuality. Check out the details here.
I started a new blog: Cartography. Not sure where I’m going with it yet but I know it will involve poetry, poetics, literature, religion, disability all from a feminist perspective
I run a blog for inmates across the country to write into and have their Voices heard. This week I published this letter from an inmate located in Maine State Prison, he is being denied medical care (very common) among other things. http://wp.me/p1yroD-5A Thanks for reading, Sophie
In light of the fact that the trial for DSK will most likely be dismissed, this may seem outdated but I still have to wonder: http://disciplineandanarchy.wordpress.com/2011/08/17/why-is-the-dsk-case-not-going-to-trial/ And I also watched The Whistleblower, didn’t like the film that much, but loved the heroine: http://disciplineandanarchy.wordpress.com/2011/08/18/movie-review-the-whistleblower-2010/
I’m not sure which of my posts will be of interest to people here, so I encourage you just to have a look. I’m fairly new to blogging, and I’d really love to have a few more readers. http://muchtooopinionated.blogspot.com Thanks, Clare
A few thoughts on the HBO Steinem documentary: http://goldennotebooks.blogspot.com/2011/08/gloria-four-decades-of-not-taking-bait.html
Daisy Deadhead’ s guest post about the Verizon strike: http://www.ethecofem.com/2011/08/support-45000-verizon-strikers.html My observation of some New York Yankees being assholes (shocking, I’m sure): http://www.ethecofem.com/2011/08/yankees-are-assholes.html A great song/illustration of how the Soviet Union fell: http://www.ethecofem.com/2011/08/video-of-several-hours-later.html Ron Paul and Ralph Nader: natural allies? http://www.ethecofem.com/2011/08/video-of-whenever.html So, males get “boy,” “guy,” and “man”; women get “girls” and “women.” What do you call those women who, if they were men, you’d call “guys”? We have posted our 15th episode on Indie Games (13 & 14 were on video games and religion and were great…if I do say so myself). There was also a really thought provoking post on hair and identity in video games! Check them out. http://www.samanthablackmon.net/notyourmamasgamer/?p=519 http://www.samanthablackmon.net/notyourmamasgamer/?p=504
Life is a Remix – The lessons of Kirby Ferguson’s Everything Is a Remix series apply to more than just artistic and technological innovation — they apply to crafting a life.
Finally wrote another post… This one is my reaction to an article in the Chicago Tribune about a refugee fighting to keep her parental rights after abandoning her baby due to severe social stigma and fear. http://feministadoptee.wordpress.com/2011/08/31/refugee-fights-for-the-right-to-parent/
