SYTYCD Season 7 Top 6 (Again)

This week on SYTYCD: Toni Reopath was a guest judge, and no injuries!! Jump over to the recap and discuss with me.

I’ll start by saying that I am PISSED that the judges kept Jose last week. Words can’t describe my annoyance. They said it was because he’s grown so much in his own style, but that’s not the point of the competition! I’m still really annoyed, so let’s just start with the dancing.

Kent & Anya – A cha cha by Jean-Marc & France. I didn’t like it all that much, he was kind of stiff and, as Mia said, choppy.

Robert & Kathryn – A Stacey Tookey contemporary. I really liked it, especially at the end when it’s Kathryn going instead of Robert. Kathryn was beautiful and Robert was good (at least he didn’t drop her).

Jose solo – It was okay.

AdéChiké & Courtney – Jazz by Tyce. It was cool and fun. They were right, he didn’t let go enough, but I still liked it.

Lauren solo – I liked it, it was good.

Jose & Comfort – Hip hop by Marty Kudelka & Dana Wilson. Didn’t like this so much. Because it was a slow hip hop routine, the dancing really has to be on point. Comfort was great, but Jose bored me. I’m annoyed it’s taken this long for the judges to critique him.

Billy Bell solo – That was a great solo.

Kent solo – Another great solo, I really enjoyed it.

Lauren & Allison – A Broadway routine by Tyce. Lauren started off really strong, but I felt she got tired or something as it went on. I still really liked it though, she danced it so well.

Robert solo – I liked his solo.

Billy & Ade – Another Stacey Tookey contemporary. I’ve missed Ade! This was a great piece, it was much better than her last social justice-y one. It was definitely Billy’s best this season.

AdéChiké solo – He’s such a great dancer! I liked it.

Jose & Kent – A Spencer Liff Broadway number. Maybe I was just tired, but I was a little bored. The best Jose’s done, and Kent’s made for Broadway. Nigel admits Jose’s probably going home this week.

Lauren & AdéChiké – A foxtrot by Jean-Marc & France. It wasn’t a great performance, but it was nice. I disagree with Nigel, though, that there have been so many great performances this evening.

Robert & Billy – Bollywood by Nakul. Sometimes Robert’s face reminded me of a cheerleader, but other than that, they did a great job. It was my favorite of the night.

Jose has to go home this week. The other person going home this week might be AdéChiké. I REALLY hope it’s not Lauren, who was with the medic by the end of the show. I have to say, you couldn’t tell in this episode that the season is almost over. A lot of the dances were just okay and some were boring. Who do you think is going home?

  1. It’s gotta be AdéChiké and Jose. Both are huge disappointments. The audience is over it with Jose, he’s been in the bottom two weeks running.

    Honestly, during the jazz, I kept noticing how stiff AdéChiké’s back was, how it was a little hunched in, and I thought, ‘the judges won’t say anything, they’re going to cream themselves,’ so I was SO GLAD that I was validated in the judges’ critique.

Frankly I’m not sure why I keep watching this show, the (strange) homophobia and exoticising of the Other just keeps getting worse, but did no one else have a problem with the piece that was based on street harassment? Just because its set to old timey music and comedic does not make cat calling and, yes, slapping an imaginary woman’s ass, okay.

  3. @ s.: YES! I hated that routine because I found the premise so off-putting. Not only were they dancing street harassment, but the story was that Jose was the older, wiser street harasser teaching the younger, more naive Kent the best ways to truly objectify women. I mean, WTF?

    But I love the show and can’t seem to stop despite all the bullshit commentary. Last night, I wanted the guest judge, Toni, to just stop. talking. about. masculinity. We get it. You don’t like any dude to dance if he isn’t masculine.

  4. ARGHHH. I agree that the sexualised or “entertaining” violence against women is part of WAY to many routines. (In only one was it presented as something NEGATIVE. There’s a theme this season with men’s hands strangling women’s necks, have you noticed? Can’t these choreographers imagine women NOT being “amusingly” abused by men???? Grrrrrrr.

    And, YES, the homophobia has always been and remains over the top and Nigel’s parting comments to Billy didn’t help–that maybe the audience couldn’t relate to him because his dancing is “too androgynous”?! Translation: “YOU’RE TOO GAY!” That’s all that really means. I think it’s that Billy is a tad too aloof. And his nervous giggle doesn’t connect with the audience. But that’s not an “androgyny” problem.

    As noted, the pressure on women to be “pretty” or “sexy” and the men to be “masculine” and “strong” is completely nauseating to me. And aggravating and almost–almost–makes me want to stop watching this show. But hell, there are only a couple more weeks and I have to see who wins. I predict a Lauren-Kent finale. I also found Kent kind of dull this week. Except for that grand leap at the end of the B’way number, but then again, wasn’t that supposed to be him pouncing on a woman?!

    Re: this week: I was kind of shocked that Robert out-danced Billy in the Bollywood piece (his form was SO much more in keeping with the genre/style of dance–Billy was downright sloppy, not finishing his moves or even being all that sharp during the moves, in terms of crispness and “being” in the dance’s style. Robert was awesome in it! But I thought Billy in the piece with Ade was a.ma.zing.

    I like AdéChiké , but he’s gotta go next week. Then Robert. I TOTALLY agree with you Frau Sally, that Jose absolutely should have gone home LAST week, which would have meant only one person would have gone home this week and who knows who that other person in the bottom three might have been: I wish neither Billy nor Lauren had to leave tonight, and it’s VERY likely if there had been only one person departing tonight, out of three, it wouldn’t have been either of them. So the judges really messed stuff up, in my view, by letting it play out this way and not letting Jose go last week. (I think they did it for ratings, and to fill out this week’s competition show–so it could be two hours long.) But that’s not a good enough excuse for not getting rid of Jose last week. I do think he’s adorable, but, hey, the show isn’t SYTYCBA (…Can Be Adorable).

    I’d love for Lauren to win.

The show is just getting to the point for me where I am so sick of the judging, their racism, sexism, fawning over dancers for the wrong reasons (cuz they are cute, rather than an amazing dancer) and so on that I may not bother to watch next season. However, I really want Lauren to win. Adechike would probably be my second choice. He is not always perfect, but when’s on, he is on! I find it him far more pleasing to watch than Robert and more versatile than Kent.

  6. It’ll be Billy and Jose who go home (I haven’t seen the results show yet), and either Kent or Lauren who win.

    My favorite piece of the night was Billy and Ade’s.
