Mel Gibson: Definitely a rational, kind and Christian-seeming kind of guy.

So Mel Gibson ranting about The Jews and calling a cop “sugar tits” was pretty high on the “wow what an asshole” scale. But he definitely just topped himself here by calling his estranged partner, Oksana Grigorieva, [trigger warning!] a series of misogynist names (the usual – whore, cunt, etc etc) and then screaming “You look like a fucking pig in heat and if you get raped by a pack of niggers it will be your fault.”

Very nice, Mel Gibson. You are definitely not a bigot or a misogynist of any kind.

He also tells her that he’s going to “burn the fucking house down … but you will blow me first.” Which is maybe kind of a rape threat?

Oksana says she recorded the conversations because she was afraid for her safety. She previously accused Mel of punching her in the face twice, giving her a concussion and breaking her teeth; he said that they simply had a loud argument. Which is fair. I mean, who among us doesn’t define “loud argument” as “punching someone in the face”?

I’m going to go ahead and say that Mel Gibson is both an asshole and a very scary human being. Not that this is surprising, at this point. But he probably should not be left with Oksana or his children unsupervised, and I hope all of Hollywood has the sense not to cast him or work with him on any more projects. But of course, if his career finally implodes after this, it will surely be the fault of the Jews.

  1. Unbelievable. If she had the presence of mind to have a tape recorder on her person– presumably one discreet enough not to be noticed– then these sorts of tirades must be fairly routine. Makes you wonder what *wasn’t* caught on tape. I’m glad she got out of that situation and is fighting for her kids.

  2. And to think lots of Christians actually believed this charlatan and watched his films. People often get duped. My Grandmother, for example, was raised very Holy Roller, and contributed money to one televangelist after another. She had a series of chronic illnesses and gave money in the hopes that they could cure her.

    So even with my faith, I still have a sense of perspective and a healthy sense of skepticism.

  3. Rape threat indeed. Could easily be read as a death threat, too, I’d say. (It doesn’t strike me as at all a stretch to suggest that he might have meant and/or she might have understood him to mean that she was going to be in the house at the time.) Holy shit.

    I really really hope Oksana and the children are safe and far far out of his reach.

But ain’t it just like Mel Gibson and his ilk—be the best all-around kyriarch you can be. Guess it will only be a matter of time before the rest of Hollywood comes rallying gallantly to Mel’s defense, a la Roman Polanski. The fury.

    And of course he’s not going to try to crush her by spending God knows how much of the money he made from that abomination of a movie on a pack of expensive weasel lawyers who will make her life as much hell as they can.

    I feel for the woman. I hope she can get away from him….. and as someone else mentioned, I really, really hope that Hollywood doesn’t come to a “but Mel is so talented!” Polanski-esque denial-fest. I bet he’ll take some anger management classes and then claim to be all better and get joint custody of the kids. After all, men get “stressed.” This reminds me of the post on Feministing about Queen Latifah coming to the defense of Chris Brown. It’s really hard to have anyone in Hollywood blame a famous man for domestic violence for longer than a few months.

    Also, if the Jews hadn’t killed Jesus, Mel Gibson wouldn’t have made all that money off Passion of the Christ! See! He should love Jews! (Ugh.)

  18. C., as someone well past forty who still thinks of herself as a sexual being (hideous, isn’t it? Old people thinking they have a right to sex), I find your ageist comments – against both Gibson and his partner – hurtful and hateful.

    I’m even more shocked that no one before me has called you on it. And no, Bitter Scribe, saying “she may be 40, but she still looks young” doesn’t count, any more than saying “she’s not really that fat” is an acceptable response to hateful fat-phobic language.

    As for Gibson himself, anyone who watched Beyond Thunderdome has been familiar with his odious attitudes towards women, minorities, and the disabled for decades. Just another Roman Polanski, protected and supported by the misogynist Hollywood establishment. I hope Grigorieva is able to get a restraining order and custody of her children, and that she doesn’t suffer too much from the inevitable masculinist retaliation. Perhaps I’m too cynical, but depending on the law in their state, Gibson may be able to have her arrested and charged for taping him without his consent.

  19. You should see the discussion about this on the JREF forums, home of skepticism and rationality and WHITE MALE PRIVILEGE. One poster is calling Oksana a “slightly deranged gold digger” and arguing that her taping their conversation is worse than anything he said, and besides she “might have provoked him into saying those things”. (Happily, there has been a general chorus of, “HOW?”)

  20. Wow . . . just wow. I never liked Gibson, and this just makes me dislike him even more.

    As to the divorce, well, I hate it when lawyers egg on the divorcing spouses to fight each other so they can make more money. As a future lawyer, it ticks me right off, and as a child of divorce whose parents barely escaped being egged on into a full-fledged courtroom throwdown (they had initial agreements as to who should get what, and then the lawyers convinced my father to argue, and then tried to get my mom to. It ended very quickly when my dad was encouraged to do something to hurt ME and not my mother.) it pisses me off grandly to think about what some lawyers do to their clients in the name of money from legal fees.

    But yeah. Gibson is a horrible, horrible creature in my mind now. I hope these tapes get him nailed in the court battle.

  22. I was really discouraged when many of my Christian friends got all excited about The Passion of the Christ. Jesus taught many things that we would do well to learn, but there is a death cult aspect to Christianity.
    Listen to any televangelist. You will not hear talk about forgiveness, unselfishness and nonviolence. You will hear a lot about redemption through the sacrifice on the cross. Meanwhile countless innocent people die every day, just like Jesus.
    The religion of The Passion is not much different from other Middle-Eastern and European martyrdom traditions, where the death of a revered figure justifies a sense of grievance today.

  23. This post and thread seem to be an invitation to hate Mel Gibson, and nothing else. I vehemently disagree with everything Gibson reportedly said and did, but now what? I want people who thrive off hate and oppression to stop making millions and influencing millions in the process as much as the next person. But I fail to see how spewing more hatred at Gibson will make any change in his behavior, or in the behavior of anyone else like him.

  24. destinee – I have only the vaguest recollection of Thunderdome. (Mostly of the insanely heavy-looking outfit Tina Turner wore.) What in that film are you referring to? (This isn’t surprising news, I just don’t remember Gibson having much input into his films until later in life.)

    Artists are frequently excused from their monstrous private acts because they are artists. Look at James Joyce, a bigger pig one would be hard-pressed to find. Picasso’s record with women was disgusting. Someone mentioned Polanski–then there’s our own adorable Woody Allen, whose primarily complaint in every film he’s ever made is that he’s going to die. God, Woody, get over it.

    Mel Gibson’s a Big Man in Hollywood because he makes LOTS OF $$$. Boycott his films?

    And since I’m an old lady, let me just add that 40 is a sublime age. I had so much fun in my forties! I had work I loved; my children were moving into lives they loved; and I had several men in my life who were interesting, witty, and good in bed. What more could anyone want?

    I don’t claim to speak for anyone else here, but that’s not what I’m trying to do. I’m disgusted and pissed off, and sometimes people like to talk about things that makes them disgusted and pissed off. And blog posts and comments are places to talk about things. You’re essentially saying that the discussion of our reactions is pointless because it won’t change his behavior, so we shouldn’t even bother. Well, if we only ever had discussions that had noticeable tangible real-life impacts, the world would be pretty fucking quiet.

  29. What is so annoying about all this is he probably would have gotten a pass from hollywood if he had not said any of these horrendous things and simply drugged and raped her…even more support would have come if she were also underage (i.e. Roman Polanski)

    I guess the thing I see with people like Mel Gibson is that most folks already know he’s like this. I remember being in endless conversations after his Passion movie came out that sounded almost the same as this one. So, it was my own impatience driving those comments, and for that, I apologize.

  33. Rape threats, arson threat, and vile racism: if a woman had said the things Gibson said–and been recorded on tape–she would have been put in jail, locked up as a public menace. Her career would absolutely be over. Nobody would think that was a harsh punishment. She’s crazy! She’s violent! She’s dangerous!

    Aspect? That’s the whole point of it! iirc, the original version of Christianity was a cult that believed the apocalypse was imminent (mostly because Jesus himself repeatedly said so). How it survived this obvious failure of prophecy is a mystery…
