SYTYCD Season 7 Top 9

Spoilers below!

Another week, another episode of SYTYCD. Jump over to the recap and discuss with me.

As usual, let me start by giving my thoughts on who went home last week, which was Cristina… I’m pretty sure you already know what my thoughts are: what the heck is Melinda still doing here?! Or Jose for that matter?? I’m bummed that Cristina left before these two.

Also, I usually comment on the solos in my recap but my notes all say the same thing for most of them, “it was nice” or “it was cool.” I really loved AdéChiké’s solo and I think Lauren’s was also good, the rest were meh, either lacking in performance or just plain boring.

AdéChiké & Lauren – They had a hip hop by Dave Scott. I was not a fan of the routine, but he was good and it was nice to see him happy for once. I like his new confidence, but I didn’t think it was as great as the judges made it seem.

Ashley & Ade – Contemporary by new choreographer Dee Caspary. I have to say, I loved this routine! I would like to see Ashley get something other than contemporary/jazz, but even in contemporary, she’s matured a lot and I’m glad the judges agree.

Robert & Courtney – A jazz routine by Sonya. I really liked the choreography and I completely agree with the judges that Sonya’s style suits Robert (though I wouldn’t say he’s as good as Mark). I was pleasantly surprised with him this week.

Melinda & Pasha – A salsa by Fabian Sanchez. You could tell she was trying really hard to get it, and there were nice moments, but she just wasn’t that good. I was glad that the judges admitted they might have made a mistake sending Cristina home instead of Melinda, but it’s a bit late for that now, isn’t it?

Lauren & Neil – Broadway by Joey Dowling. I think she did a good job, wardrobe malfunction and all. She didn’t overdo the sexiness and she’s definitely gotten better since the first show.

Billy & Kathryn – They had a Stacey Tookey contemporary piece. Billy definitely has a problem connecting, but I loved watching this anyway. The choreography was great, the dancing was great, Kathryn is wonderful. Also loved all the airtime they gave Legacy!

Jose & Anya – A samba by Dmitry. While Jose did better than expected, he is just not good enough to be on this show and the fact that he’s still here is starting to annoy me. Can they please critique him? Yes, he makes them smile but this is a DANCE competition not a smiling competition.

Kent & Allison – A Mandy Moore jazz number. I think the problem with Kent is that he does lose more Kent-ness each week, but he just started with so much of it that it’s slow progress. Hopefully he can mature more for next week, otherwise, I’ll be fine with having him leave.

Alex & Twitch – Hip hop by Tabitha & Napoleon. Ok, so, first of all, why were they making such a huge deal about two guys dancing together? This isn’t the first time they’ve ever done this, and it’s hip hop, not ballroom, so it’s nothing out of the ordinary. I don’t get it. That said, he did a great job and deserved the praise he got, though wtf is up with his face?? It was a little distracting at times because it felt like he was trying too hard. But anyway, I was impressed. And the choreography really was quite good, I agree with Nigel that it’s the best routine they’ve choreographed.

I am hoping that Melinda or Jose will go home tonight. I’d love it if they both left, but that’s not possible, so I’ll take what I can get.

What did you all think of the episode? Did you enjoy it? Who do you want to see go home?

  1. The show was a great night of fabulously entertaining dances, capped off with the Alex/Twitch hip hop routine which was ‘unbelievable’! I expected Alex to be good, but wow! he was fabulous and the routine and the performance deserved the huge roar of the crowd, the standing O of the crowd and judges, and the profuse praise. I smile every time I recall that Mia was so excited that she couldn’t stand still as the three judges gave their long standing O for the performance. She was just beside herself with joy! I also enjoyed watching Adechike finally come alive during his dance routine with Lauren… but then WHO WOULDN’T!!!! DANCING WITH LAUREN WOULD MAKE ANY HETERO MALE COME ALIVE IN SO MANY WAYS!!!! She is soooooooo
spectacular! .. both as a dancer and a person with a huge X factor!!!! Her smile totally lights up the universe– she is CHARISMA PERSONIFIED!!!

Undoubtedly, it will be Melinda leaving this week, but I’d prefer it were Jose, just as I would have preferred Robert to leave last week.
Melinda has suffered the detriment of having to do two ballroom routines in a row, which require dancing in high heals with narrow heels and she is obviously not comfortable in those shoes and that affects her performance. She might actually do quite well in a jazz, Broadway or contemporary routine, if given a chance.
If it is Melinda this week, I hope it will be Jose, Kent and Robert, in that order, in the next three weeks. Jose is not progressing like Legacy did and some other b-boys did in past seasons, and should go soon. Kent has boyish charm but that wears thin in a hurry. [I think he was put on the show to try to attract middle-America, small town viewers. Seemed to me that there were much better dancers than he in Vegas.] Robert’s mugging and silliness bothered me from day 1 and I don’t seem him making any progress.

  2. I don’t know why, but Robert is growing on me. I just can’t explain it…

Anyhoo, I voted for Alex, because wow, ballet boy does hip-hop and kills it! Plus, I thought the whole concept and choreography was spot-on for them and I enjoyed a good laugh at the end when Twitch did a little ballet.

I think Adechike was my next favorite. I loved seeing his personality come out and I thought he really sold the performance. I was getting annoyed with him, because he’s so good, but his performance was meh.

I was really annoyed with the lack of critique of Jose, too. I mean c’mon. You can still love his charisma, but critique his technique. How is he going to improve otherwise? Grrr.

Why did it take them so long to get rid of Melinda? I mean the girl can hoof it and I do love her tenacity (I mean she just fixed that whole dress and heel incident and carried on, excellent!), but the judges told her every week “be more vulnerable,” but she just carried on with the same beautiful, “can’t-bring-me-down-smile.” But, I did think it was kind of mean of Mia and Adam to say maybe we made the wrong decision. Well, obviously, but don’t make Melinda have to hear the fact that you were stupid.

  3. I would hope Jose and then Adechike would go next, based on skill. Or maybe Kent. Adechike isn’t as good as Kent, but Kent is super-annoying. Robert is a good dancer, but I find him boring.

What I really took away from that episode was, “I want Courtney’s pants.” Seriously badly. I want them. Sparkly rainbow pants.
