Neil Horsley: Great Guy.

Meet Neil Horsley. He created one of the “Most Wanted” websites with the names and addresses of abortion providers, and also posted videos of women entering abortion clinics. Cool! He deserves to have a lot of good things happen to him in life. And today is Neil Horsely’s day, because charges his ongoing criminal case — which involved him picketing Elton John’s house with a sign saying “Elton John Must Die” — were dropped. Congrats, Neil Horsley. I’m glad things are going so well for you. You seem like a really neat human being. Definitely a safe and responsible guy. I am sad I don’t live in Atlanta so that I can have you as a neighbor.

In other news, a black kid with autism sits in the grass and six schools get locked down.

  1. Neil Horsley is also the guy who, in an interview, brought up of his own accord that he had raped a mule. He is a sick, sick, sick guy who most certainly does not belong on the streets, and the juxtaposition of his story against that poor kid’s is *beyond* heartbreaking. It really doesn’t sound like a medical alert bracelet would have made a damn bit of difference given the demonstrated callousness of those police officers.

  2. Oh wow! I didn’t even know this dude was still around, but he was one of my favorite Internet extremists, back in the day. He is kind of like Fred Phelps Lite.

  5. Great post, Jill. Adorable sarcasm and a perfect juxtaposition. It’s really sickening that we have police officers paid by the state to protect the privileged and harass/abuse the oppressed.

  6. What’s really sad is that, even though I missed the “black kid” part of the link, and long before I saw the photo of Neli I knew he was black. How did I achieve this miraculous feat of precognition? Easy, no one ever calls the police and reports that a white kid sitting under a tree is “possibly in possession of a gun” unless the kid actually has a gun.

    My kid is half white and half black, which means black. He’s not yet four, but I still worry about how I, as a white guy with no direct experience in the matter, can give him the talk about how the police aren’t his friends, how when (not if, when) he is harassed by the police for the crime of being black he must accept the humiliation and idiocy or run the risk of being beaten and tossed in prison.

    As for Horsley, I’m not surprised. Disgusted, yes. Surprised no. The fanatics are getting bolder, and in many places the police and judiciary are on the side of the fanatics.

    In a lot of ways I think Obama’s election was the trigger. Not that its Obama’s fault, of course, but his mere existence as a black, non-southern, Democrat in the White House is going to get the fanatics in an uproar.

    I don’t think they’re going to stop until they produce another McVeigh, and I’m worried that now, unlike back in the 1990’s, they won’t stop even then.

    We’re already seeing praise from the extreme right for violent acts. Roeder is seen as a hero in many quarters and has not been wholly repudiated even by the more mainstream leaning groups.

    Stack is lionized by many of the Teabaggers, and that more than the embrace of Roeder worries me. The anti-choice crowd has always made a place for the violent so their embrace of Roeder is hardly surprising. But Stack’s act of domestic terrorism doesn’t fit any prior pattern for right wing embrace of violence, which indicates (to me anyway) that they’re becoming more willing to accept terrorism as a legitimate tactic.

    The transformation from violent rhetoric to violent action is one of those critical periods in the evolution of a Fascist movement. When that move has failed, when violent actions repel the bulk of the movement, the movement tends to sputter and die out. When that move succeeds, and the proto-Fascist movement begins to successfully embrace and employ violence as a method of dealing with it’s political foes that’s when thing start to go bad very quickly.
