Who Wants to Buy Me a Present?

Because I want one of these. You should get one too. My favorites: The Show Is Upstairs, Excerise Your Rights, and Marriage Is So Gay.

I love Periel (for anyone in the NY area, Voices for Choice at NYU will be hosting a fashion show in the spring featuring her new line). She makes amazing, edgy clothes with progressive messages. Support her if you can!

  1. I want one too, but they hafta be not white, and they hafta be available in men’s sizes. I’m not a man, but I can’t wear those bitty girl shirts.

  2. All right, I’m just going to come out and say it: I hate that “the show is upstairs” shirt, and here’s why:

I’m a straight woman. I am, for the most part, wholly uninterested in breasts, other than the health of my own. When I talk to women, I make eye contact with them the entire time, unless they’re gesturing with their hands, in which case I’ll look at their hands as well. I will not look downward. I mean, what’s the point?

However, if my interlocutor has text printed across her chest, then yes, my eyes will gravitate to her chest, and linger for as long as it takes for me to finish reading. Despite my lack of sexual attraction to breasts in general. Text implicitly invites readers, even if it explicitly says “stay away”. You have to actually read the text in order to get the “stay away” message.

“The show is upstairs”? Fine; very well. I’d never have even ventured onto the second floor in the first place if I hadn’t been invited there. And now? I’m pretty sure I’m not even interested in the show anymore.
