I recently reread Rita Mae Brown’s “Take a Lesbian to Lunch” and started thinking about how many “other people’s movements” I’ve been part of as a WBT (woman born transsexual) that have either excluded me or expected me to give up my identity. This week’s entry is “Take a Woman Born Transsexual to lunch”. http://womenborntranssexual.com/2009/07/05/take-a-woman-borntranssexual-to-lunch/

When it comes to women masturbating they are still a taboo subject.
Hi there! I’m fairly new to the blogosphere but I’ve been reading feministe for a while. I’m excited to finally be able to participate in shameless self-promotion Sunday. This week I wrote a piece on teen sexuality: http://hellhathnofury1.blogspot.com/2009/07/why-teen-sex-is-not-immoral-clusterfuck.html and just this morning I wrote a post critiquing a very deranged conservative woman’s article. Her article is a fairly old piece, but I thought it was worth a bit of commentary: http://hellhathnofury1.blogspot.com/2009/07/nancy-morgan-on-feminist-meltdown.html
I commented on a NYT piece on leadership in the gay rights movement, titling my post “Don’t Let Them Jesse Jackson You” (this will be x-posted at postbourgie.com next week): http://socialsciencelite.blogspot.com/2009/07/dont-let-them-jesse-jackson-you.html Tony’s take on the BET awards, specifically discussing the one shining moment of the night: http://socialsciencelite.blogspot.com/2009/06/at-least-bet-got-one-thing-right-and-i.html Tony on school policy and removing summer school programs: http://socialsciencelite.blogspot.com/2009/07/school-is-out.html And finally, I comment on one of the most touching, yet tragic photos that really captures urban decline beautifully: A photo of legendary Detroit Tiger Alan Trammell watching Old Tiger Stadium be demolished: http://socialsciencelite.blogspot.com/2009/07/sometimes-even-players-have-to-watch.html
Transformers Revenge of the Fallen: Resurrection of the Dumbo crows and women as props The racism and sexism of Michael Bay’s latest train wreck. Fuzz Therapy Kitty blogging. Book covers: fragmented women. More examples of women’s bodies being fragmented–and the implications of violence that arise from this. Slim that turkey neck with a strangely phallic product. I can barely express how ridiculous this thing looks…
This week I wrote the following: Hooray for fathers and cheerleading! about an Ad Council commercial. “This is sand. It represents desert.” about the 4th of July Twilight Zone marathon on the SciFi Network. Excitement! But not too much, because it’s Daria. about Daria coming to DVD in 2010. That’s right, Colin Powell! about the former Secretary of State and Judge Sonia Sotomayor. Enjoy!
The call for submissions for the 3rd Asian Women Blog Carnival is still up! The theme is the intersection between culture and sexism. We’ve also opened up the carnival to allies, so long as the posts are centered around Asian women. There hasn’t been a whole lot else feminism-centered, except for this 101 on a theory on how patriarchy became the dominant institution in the world. I also recently wrote this on Racialicious: The Intersection of Race and Steampunk. A lot of people seem to like it.
I’ve started running a series of Lee Stranahan videos on healthcare reform that you can view here and here . I also have a link to the one that is specifically related to breast cancer (and honest and excellent) but is not safe for work Finally I printed a thank you note I sent to Senator Kay Hagan for her vote on health care reform. More of course, but I’ve got to read some of this other stuff first.
I got a hilarious drive-by comment about how I’m a big ol’ hypocrite for thinking objectification of trans guys isn’t okay.

This week at Deeply Problematic, I wrote: CALL FOR ENTRIES: 50 Books for Problematic Times: This project (previously 50 Books for Post-Modern Times) is a response to the list below, requesting the folks send in books (or bodies of work) by writers who have relevance to this modern world without the benefit of being a white hetero cis man. I’ve done some writing on Danish politics and the stigmatization of immigrants in Denmark. http://kriswager.blogspot.com/2009/07/there-is-something-rotten-in-denmark.html
On my baby blog, I just wrote a post on parentism – the discrimination against people on the basis of whether or not they have children. I identified parentism in a NYT article on the challenges facing White House employees and their “families” – that is, their children. http://thisfieldisrequired.com/2009/07/05/parentism-an-example/

Here are the posts from the past week which will most likely be of the greatest interests to regular readers: Marriage Privilege What About Farrah Fawcett?
Hello! At The Czech: Now, why would it be that an affluent, white, fraternity president didn’t go to jail for the coke ring he was running?
I took a first foray into transgender issues with Fun Feminist Says: Transphobia’s Not Funny. I suspect I learned more from the experience than anyone else, thanks to commenters who generously shared their more-knowledgeable perspectives. I also posted my frankly juvenile speculations in response to Sarah Palin’s resignations, but I’m not at all convinced they deserve a link of their own. Happy Fourth to all of you from central Europe!
I blogged about why I actually believe Sarah Palin is telling the truth about her reasons for resigning.
For folks who have never heard of Terri Gibbs, I wrote about her today. Shameless kitten/granddaughter blogging (Cuteness overload!)
My vagina is kind of gross right now and that’s okay. I wrote about how a client helped me feel more confident. I got angry at the Telegraph for completely misrepresenting a scientific study about rape. And then I got even angrier about a stereotypical, misogynistic list of the 50 mistakes women make when having sex.
Nothing of great seriousness this week, since I had a pretty brutal one at work. From our “the Hammer is my penis” department Euphemisms you won’t be seeing in my writing that I have seen in others. “Spartan of Love” is my fave, but “Zipper Wookiee” runs a close second. Some crochet work Projects I actually finished! Various Bits of writing stuff, inculding a squick question If anyone knows how to write an anthology proposal, please leave a link in the comments? Niko-Chan, my fourth novel, came out this week as an e-book.
In the last week, I started writing up my adventures into the Epistles of the New Testament. The Epistles form the only part of the Bible I haven’t read yet, so this is going to complete my picture of what it actually says (as opposed to what people say it says). The first is St Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, in which we first encounter St Paul’s homophobia (which I shall discuss more when I write up 1 Corinthians). In other news, the British Foreign office has made it official policy for diplomats to support LGBT rights even where it will anger the regimes where those diplomats are stationed. I am cautiously optimistic about this.
I wrote the most interesting recap ever written of the world’s most unnecessary diet/dance show, “Dance Your Ass Off.” And I wrote about the death of Pina Bausch. Lots of videos!

I complain about people who complain incessantly about the decline in literary reading, their inability to distinguish between literary reading and reading, and the notion that literature is somehow essential to becoming a good person or something. and, three conversations with my hilarious/smart friend keane: -about an NYTimes article about New Yorkers who insist on white furniture -a preview full of dread at learning Caitlin Flanagan has an article about marriage in Time Magazine -and real-time responses to reading the actual article, part horrified snark and part serious engagement with her argument, with at the end some frustration at the terms set up in advance for these conversations
Over at Happy Bodies: We discussed how fat people are portrayed in the media: on idolizing fat and playing the buffoon. We also announced our upcoming Male Body Week in which we turn our attention solely to self-identified men; how they relate to their bodies and how their bodies are treated. We’re looking for submissions!
In Australia, if a couple starves a child/children to death in their house, the (resident) father will garner a verdict of manslaughter while the mother will be convicted of murder. Also in Australia, the mainstream media is still very hyped up by selfish women who refuse to listen to the evidence of their biological clock!
At Bitch Flicks this week: Misogyny Still Reins at the Box Office, a look at the new Transformers movie (which also won the holiday weekend box office). A review of the 2007 film Persepolis. Our hopes for Business Trip, an upcoming Universal movie about four ladies who go on a business trip and never get any real work done. An analysis of the recent Forbes release about how much less actresses in Hollywood really make.

Win a signed copy of The Blue Cotton Gown! The Secret Lives of Boys: Inside the Raw Emotional World of Male Teens is exactly the kind of book I love to read. It is a collection of well-written case studies that give the reader a snapshot of teenage boys that most adults today don’t see. Although I’m no longer a teenager, and I’m not male, I do have a younger brother—someone just heading out of his teenage years—and I found myself identifying in some way with each of the ten boys Saval highlights. Feeling Backward: Loss and the Politics of Queer History is a brilliant book that attempts the “impossible” and succeeds. Using Michel Foucault and Eve Sedgwick as theoretical touchstones, and incorporating Raymond Williams’s “structures of feeling,” Heather Love “feels backward” to reimagine and connect with aspects of a queer past that had been rendered invisible. Shouting Fire: Stories from the Edge of Free Speech: Perhaps because I was working in the New York City public schools at the time, I was particularly moved by the story of Debbie Almontaser, the founding principal of Khalil Gibran International Academy (KGIA), an English-Arabic public school in Brooklyn, New York. KGIA is one of sixty-eight dual language schools intended to assist new immigrants with assimilating to their new home and foster an appreciation for the study of Arabic language and culture. Just one month before the school was slated to open, Almontaser was forced to resign as a result of anti-Arab, anti-Muslim fire that was sparked by Rightwing group Stop the Madrassa, fanned by Fox News, and finally made into an inferno by New York Post journalist Chuck Bennett, who took Almontaser’s solicited explanation of the word intifada vastly out of context in order to write a sensationalistic story. The injustice done to Almontaser is devastating, though completely legal according to free speech laws.
Shockingly, I updated my blog. There are now two related posts musing on personal gender issues. The first is Solo Travel: A Butchie’s Perspective and the second finds me laughing at the lady in the mirror. The other thing I wrote is nerdy snark about about an old Malay movie, but it’s really aimed at other local bloggers. What a weird pair of potential audiences!
At SAFER, we posted a really informative interview with Associate Director of the Bronx Sexual Assault Response Team and re-posted an awesome piece by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha on “how to make your pelvic exam not suck.”

*deep breath* Here is my first (late) submission on the movie we love to hate. I had hoped the first would be serious, but it seems this was the week to bash Michael Bay.

I wonder why so many men think that lewd comments made at strangers will get them laid, and I did a so-far review of an older Jodi Picoult book called Salem Falls.
