Etsy

Via Mac I have discovered an eBay-esque site called Etsy where you can buy handmade items from all over the globe. I have decided that I will quite possibly keel over and die if I do not get my hands on this. Or this. And especially this.

I really need to learn to sew.

  1. It is great fun to sew.

My wife started when she decided to make her own dress for a wedding we were going to. She bought a “super easy” pattern, and started 14 days befor the wedding. The week before the wedding we had to stay at my mom’s house, so she could help Ninette with the dress.

The next time she chose an “easy” pattern, and recruited are friend who were more experienced in sewing than my motyher. It only took them three full weekends – a lot of fights – a little tears – and some blood to finish the dress.

Since then it has been going uphill though – the last pattern shw used was “medium” I think.

But right now shes into knitting, and she has made about 5 shawls the last half year. She just started a new one – and my careful enquiry as to just how many shawls she needed was met with an ice cold stare – apparently the new shawl is an indoor one, meant to pep up outfits.

We share the housework, I’m gonna stay home for at least three months when we have a child, so in some ways we’re a little relaxed when it comes to gender roles, but damn when it comes to fashin and handiwork were practically victorian!

  2. I love that site! I could drop a bundle.

I can sew, but I don’t have any time for it anymore. I’ve made two bridesmaid dresses, and mused about making my own wedding dress, but decided that it would have been too much stress on top of everything else. The only projects I can take time for now are blanket bears for friends and family with new babies.

  3. I’d be delighted to give you a sewing lesson. Knitting math is much, much harder than sewing math.

Etsy seems like a great site. I’ve actually got a few bags I keep meaning to photograph and put up there, but it’s on that long to-do list that gets longer instead of shorter everyday.

And I’m totally down with an Indiana Chicago meet-up for bloggers. I’d love to meet some of the folks I only know by moniker.
