  1. I seem to remember seeing the original of that video a couple years ago–it’s from 1974. Cool that it’s been reappropriated, really depressing that nothing has changed.

  2. Only objection to the website behind it:

“What would your family do with $ 434.000”

So if I don’t spawn, I don’t deserve equal pay?

I know that’s not at all what they’re trying to say, it just annoys the hell out of me that “woman” is still equated with family automatically.

  3. UnFit, I think they chose that wording to remind men that this affects them, too. If they’re married to a woman or are younger and supported by their mothers or have another female family member making money, then her making less affects the whole family. Of course, men should care even if it didn’t affect them, but people aren’t always like that.

  4. Also, UnFit, it makes a lot more sense when you consider that the site is made by MomsRising, an organization that works on feminist issues through the lenses of issues affecting women with children.

  5. Diffidently,I bring a little thought into your forum. It’s not for everyone, but you might try it.First, let’s imagine a large corporation;we’ll call it Engulf and Devour.Engulf and Devour’s raison d’etre is to make money. If E and D can get equally qualified candidates at 77 % of the rate it pays similar candidates with penises, why would they hire men?
If one is to argue the market doesn’t value certain services as well as you think they should,I will point out anyone can start their own corporation and pay what they want.People who want a career paying more should learn services for which there is a perceived need and value.I’m not up to date onn this, but when i last checked,of 23 studies on pre school ,only one showed a lasting effect. And that’s not been replicable. You can call someone something other mthan a baby sitter, but it really doesn’t alter their skills or effectiveness.
    And ,I really don’t like doing this,but,”Reality,What a Concept”.

  6. Corwin, when you try to dismiss teachers with a post as badly written and punctuated as that, you really just look like a moron.

Also, companies don’t pay women less because they think we’re just as qualified as men. When it comes to employment and pay discrimination there’s a whole bunch of sexism (and other -isms when we’re talking about other discrimination) that really cannot be explained with any form of logic. But waiting around for women to get more pay or more jobs because we’re “a bargin” is not going to work.

  7. “cannot be explained with any form of logic.”?

Then how can it be explained at all if absolutely no form of logic can be used? Just curious.

Is anyone else interested to see what happens with equal pay once the stats from this year are in? Should be quite fascinating.

  8. Marle,I doubt you’ve evr heard of Boolean Logic, but you’ve written a content free post.As a fictional character(Beezle Bug) stated ,”This thinkin’ isn’t for everyone,Boss.”Please try to answer ,rather than, in effect, saying “Because”.Or ,don’t answer.
Marle,if I may-you’re not advocating equal pay for equal work. You’re advocating jobs be paid more than the market-i.e. what others feel your work is worth.
The “Importance of being Fuzzy” talks of terminology inflation.Used cars becoming’Pre -owned’.Now a question for you.I’m sure i could have answered this when I was ,say,10.How much will the sea level rise if the entire Arctic ice cap melts.(Remember,I’m not asking if you believe in Global Warming or Cultural Bias in standardized tests.I’m just asking how much will the ocean rise.)
And,yes,I am accusisng you of ,at best, emotional over drive.(And,at worst, not being bright.)But this is a forum where peopel seem to act as a Pep Rally.I would hazard a guess you were rather vocal about an oil company/Republican cartel raising oil prices last summer.
    Sorry about the commas.Merry Christmas.

  9. Wow, this thread has had an attack of the needlessly obtuse.

Of course the market does not always act rationally or in its own self-interest. Economists abandoned the idea that rational actors run everything in a free market ages ago.

And of course people do illogical things, including discriminating against people when it makes no sense. Or alternatively, they may be getting intangible benefits for sexist discrimination, such as maintaining an axis of exclusivity that they find useful for their own business networks — commonly referred to as an “old boys’ club.” Just another of the many reasons why there is no such thing (and shouldn’t be, if you ask me) as a completely “free market.”

And really — Boolean logic? A XOR B, realy? Hee hee.
